    Ayurvedic Massages

    Ayurveda offers two varities of massages based on tridosha theories

    ♦ Abhyangam { Applying strokes on the downward direction}

    ♦ Udhvarthanam { Applying strokes on the opposite direction}


    Massage done with medicated oil all over the body in seven postures. Mostly concentrated to head, ear, palm and feet. The benefits are it prevents ageing, increases the softness of the skin and gives the skin a healthy glow,strengthens the tissue,improves vision and life span.

    The duration of the process is 90 minutes

    Padabhyangam {Foot Massage}

    According to ayurveda all nadis {meridians} begin in the scalp and ends in the souls of the feet.Many neural endings, receptors and marmas {vital points} are located here.This helps to calm the mind, maintain eye sight, hearing, improves peripheral circulation,alleviates pain, improve muscle tone and nourishes the skin.

    The duration of this process is 45 minutes.

    Head , Neck and shoulder massage.

    Head massage is considered to be a very effective stress reliever. The head massage helps the person relax the muscles of the head ,shoulders, neck and even back. It also relieves both chronic and acute headache. It rejuvenates the brain cells. Head massage is very instrumental for achieving a sound sleep.

    The duration of the massage is 40 minutes.


    Dry herbal powder and medicated oil is used for doing this process. The powder will exfoliate the body while stimulating the lymphatic system and balance the kapbha dosha. The repeated movement over hair follicles and skin tissues promote the breakdown of fatty deposits and give complexion to skin.

    The duration of this process is 60 minutes.




    This is one of the most effective therapies, pizhichil literally means squeezing. It involves warm medicated oil being squeezed from a piece of oil soaked cloth on the patients body which is simultaneously given a gentle rhythmic massage. This is very effective in treating all rheumatic diseases, arthtritis, paralysis, neurological disorders and blood pressure.

    Types of Pindasvedam

    (Fomentation process with bolus made by various herbal drugs)

    ♦ Njavara Kizhi

    ♦ Njavara Thepu

    ♦ Elakizhii

    ♦ Navadhanyakizhi

    ♦ Narangakizhi

    Ela kizhi

    Herbal leaves are applied to the whole body in boluses with hot medicated oils along with massage is done. It relieves pain and oedema . It is indicated in arthritis, spondylosis and back ache.

    Njavara kizhi

    Here the boluses of njavara are made into a handled bag and dipped in warm decoction and applied to the whole body. This makes the body of the person perspire and provide direct nourishment to soft tissues near the skin.


    Here the medicated oil is poured on the forehead in a rhythmic way.This process is done along with the massage. By doing this it deeply relaxes the nervous system. Integrate brain function. Increases blood circulation to the brain, improves memory, nourish the hair and scalp.

    Types of Shirodhara.

    ♦ Kashayadhara (dhara with decoction)

    ♦ Thailadhara (dhara with medicated oil)

    ♦ Ksheeradhara (dhara with milk)

    ♦ Takradhara (dhara with buttermilk)


    In this process certain luke warm herbal oil are poured into a cap fitted on the head 15 to 60 minutes according to the condition of the person.
